  1. Hi guys Well I thought I should post a link here to the 404 registry that I am doing with Le Club 404 in France. It has been going quite well so far, especially with the 404 C models, of which we have accounted for 8.4% of the total production. The basic statistics on the cars are visible here (slightly out of date, my webmaster is too busy to update it): basic statistics Cars already in the database can be queried here: search on a VIN The formats of 404 C VINs, for example are: 4495xxx, 459xxxx, 467xxxx and 680xxxx. The data can be entered here: enter a new VIN in the registry Thanks for helping out in this project, in the 404's 50th year!

    Peugeot 404 VIN registry

Submitted today at the Register website: 6800367, Cabriolet Injection, 17 février 1967, Blanc Saratoga 1031 (Blanc Arosa??), Cuir Noir 2000, Bought from first owner, partially restored, soft top needs replacement, missing two driving lights in grille, COUTERNON FRANCE (no photo) Total : 2215
  3. In the better late than never category....for nearly 28 years I have owned my 1966 404 Coupé Injection. Finally the restoration is about to begin. The first step is to strip the shell bare. As of the 28th of November 2016, all that is left to do is the dashboard, heater and a bit of stainless steel trim on the driver's side door. The engine and gearbox are out, the brake lines, fuel lines, wiring and everything else but the basic suspension. Because the 404 has a torque tube, I had to bolt it up to the transmission mount (normally it's bolted into the gearbox) to keep the car on its wheels. It is going to be flat bedded down to Victoria by Top Notch Towing, to Coachwerks on Ellice Street. Coachwerks does rare car restorations - they are choosy about the projects they will take. I guess my pitch worked because it's a go! Mike Grams is my contact there. This shop has done some amazing work on various show cars, dozens of 300 SLs, Pebble Beach show cars for Rudi and Company (Rudi Koniczek - they do all his bodywork). The work is going to be very expensive, but worth it to me! This photo shows the 404C just after the engine had been pulled. It's a KF2 unit with 96 HP. When it is rebuilt, I am hoping for 100. This should be accomplished by using a Reinz head gasket instead of the metal/asbestos one that they usually had. I have a new head for the engine, which will have hardened valve seats installed before I use it. I will tear down the engine when the car is in the shop, to assess its condition. A new piston/liner kit will go in, for sure, as well as the new head. Today we dropped off the NOS body panels I have collected for the car over the years at Island Quick Strip in Sidney BC. We managed to get them all into and on the Mercedes B 200! In a couple of weeks, the whole bodyshell will be there, and thereafter at Coachwerks.
  4. Oops, the price is $5000, not 6000. Or a bit more with tax, plus $100 more for the seat heaters.
  5. Something weird is going on with the last photo but the link works....
  6. There's not a lot more to see - they're very simple seats..... Heating element cord for the backrest....adjustment knobs for backrest angle and their stops. Side view. Underneath - new bands and foam visible, as well as the seat cushion heating element cord.
  7. I will see him tomorrow and ask, but he's a home-based business so I don't know how well connected to Seattle upholsters he will be. Our dollar is cheap now. Mind you, all seats plus headliner are 6 grand CAD.
  8. The front seats have been reupholstered by Geoff Chrysler. Very nice: natural grain dyed through light grey "Hyde" brand leather, with heating elements (I'll need a better alternator than it came with to power that!). Parts of the headliner (also redone by Geoff) are visible in the foreground. His next task is redoing the rear bench, which has a fold-down armrest. I may get the parts in the photo this coming Monday.

Thanks to the 404 Club members in France who got these numbers for me: 4594799, Carrosserie 6468, Coupé Injection 1965, Gris Clair, Int. Noir, For sale April 2019, 9900 €, carbureted engine, much body corrosion, VERSAILLES FRANCE 4670285, Cabriolet Carburateur 1968, Noir 1000, Cuir Rouge, Auctioned in Avignon, restored, AVIGNON FRANCE Total: 2214 !
  10. The handbrake cable and control were assembled and mounted today, along with the pedal box. The worst part of the whole operation was discovering that the buttress under the driver's side, which is a Peugeot original, has a captive stud that is about 6 mm too short to hold the metal handbrake sheath under the driver's floor. So I had to remove the brass clamp and reduce its thickness by about 3 mm on both sides using a Dremel and files (good old engineering on this part, with massive redundancy) in order to get it on. The pedal box was dead easy of course and the stuff under the car was as well.

6801078, Cabriolet Injection, 01 mai 1967, GERMANY 4670597, Cabriolet Carburateur, mai 1968, Blanc Arosa 1132, Cuir Noir 2000, For sale March 2019, 39,250 Euros at Hans LAMMERS B.V., MIJDRECHT NETHERLANDS 4594055, Coupé Injection 1965, SARTROUVILLE FRANCE Total: 2212 !
  12. I finally got the steering column mounted. Instead of the flector I used a Paulstra Septor for the pinion link.
  13. A spare new old stock window winder for the 404C. There are two good (I think they are!) used ones in the car, so this is my reserve.
  14. Yes, that is part of the plan. In the 404 KF2, the alternator is buried deep on the exhaust side and can't be seen at all from above, so a non-original one will be quite OK. The original is 400W. I'm aiming for over a kW.
  15. ...the seats will be fitted with heating elements..... And.... I bought a different set of rubber isolators for the wiper motor and drive, because it's in a colour that more closely matches the latex rubber original. The pale red ones in the photo will be used in the 404C and the others will be spare parts. All the red ones are in what seems to be silicone rubber so should handily outlive the originals.

  18. Saturday the 404C seats and headliner (including the plated parts in the above post) went down to Rightway Heritage Trim in Highlands near Victoria BC. The headliner will be remade, the metal headliner trims will be also retrimmed, and the seats will be stripped, blasted, painted and reupholstered in a light grey natural dyed through leather (not embossed) tanned by the firm Hyde. I may get them back by June...
  19. It already does. Peugeot Classic makes a wide range of new parts that have been unavailable for decades now. I'll consider buying one as my next and last new car, probably a hybrid or electric. My 2008 Benz should last to 400,000 km if not 500,000. Then I'll be looking for a final daily driver - the 404C will be a good weather only car.
  20. Last bit of work done at Victoria Plating Ltd: The 4 holes that a previous owner had punched into the sill/rocker panel embellishment strips when the captive bolts rusted off decades ago were welded shut and the outside was polished so this patching work became invisible; the two upper rear fender trims were de-dented and then polished; cadmium plating on the headliner trim panels which are covered with soft headliner material. This was done because they could rust as the originals did and that distorts the fabric as the iron oxide builds up; and finally the hardware for the handbrake components under the car were replated in yellow cadmium.

  24. New rubber parts for the wiper motor: Instrument panel connected - the wiring as built in my car is very different than the wiring diagram: The instrument panel installed. Ventilator switch is now mounted on the dashboard rather than the SOFICA heater box:
