I've just inherited this car and although it runs fine when it's reached
normal operating temperature, when started from cold, the auto-choke causes
the engine to "idle" just below 3,000 rpm. Consequently when the
transmission is engaged, the torque-converter takes a fair beating due to
the speed difference across it.
I don't yet have a manual for the car, however the engine is fitted with a
Solex downdraught carburettor with the auto-choke mechanism under a black
plastic cover on the offside of the carb (RHD vehicle).
I've sprayed release-oil into the mechanism without any improvement.
If anyone has any experience of this symptom would they be able to help ?
Cheers
