The .84mm standout is for XD2, .79mm for XD2S (and XD3T I assume).

Don't rely on Altrom, or any other non-specialist website for accurate application information. Ask for brand information--there are some cheap gaskets out there.

Also, there is a widespread misconception that the gasket thickness on XD engines has something to do with resurfacing of the head. It does NOT! It has to do exclusively with the piston standout. Milling the head has next to no influence on compression ratio, because the bulk of the combustion chamber is inside the swirl chamber which has but a narrow mouth on the face of the head. There is a little volume in the valve cutouts, but the valves and seats are usually ground when the head is milled, recessing them enough to compensate for the volume of the cutout lost by milling.

This is a serious and widely prevalent misconception which I believe is responsible for a lot of crappy-running diesels. In my experience, more than 95% of diesels came with 2-notch (1.58mm) gaskets originally, and should have a 2-notch replacement, but I estimate that about 75% of headgaskets sold (not by me!) are 3- or even 4-notch.

My advice is, if you take off a 2-notch gasket, and you don't see valve marks on the piston tops, put one back. If you take off a 3-notch, measure the standout and replace accordingly, which will probably be with a 2-notch, because some misinformed or lazy ("Play it safe--use the thick one") tech has been in there before. Checking my sales records, of the latest 40 headgaskets I have sold after issuing the above advice, 39 have been 2-notch.

On the issue of headbolts, the later TTY bolts, threaded more than half way up, are much better than the early bolts, and should be retrofitted on TD and XD2C engines that don't have them already. They can be reused five times, but they usually won't be because they are much more effective at holding the gasket, so the head may not have to come off again until it cracks. TheTTY bolt heads look just like the early bolts so you have to pull one to tell which bolts you have on a pre-'86 engine.

My two-bits worth.
