I was hoping that someone out there would be kind enough to let me
know the secret technique for disassembling XN6 rocker arm assemblies.
Actually, that same person could tell me the secret for 404 and 504
assemblies because, if I remember correctly, they are all pretty much
the same and all impossible to disassemble or, at least, very, very
hard. How do you get those cross pieces off without cracking them as
you gently tap with a plastic hammer for the five millionth time,
please tell me? I have tried carb cleaner, WD-40, Liquid Wrench,
tears, and even careful heating with a propane torch. It generally,
with all of the above, takes me 2 hours to wrestle an assembly into
submission.
As to whether I deserve to know the secret or not, I can only say that
I have been wounded many times working on Peugeots and have lost
probably quarts, not just pints, of blood. If Peugeot gave out Purple
Hearts for injuries in the field or garage I would have a uniform
(jacket and pants) covered in them. I feel I have put in my time
performing thankless tasks on this particular breed of cars and I feel
that I am due some sort of enlightenment.
One other thing that I am a bit unclear on is this preoccupation with
cleanliness that I keep running in to when working on cars. The
rocker arm assembly on my 505 is the filthiest thing on earth. Why
should I piecemeal it and treat it and the top of the block and the
underside of the cylinder head as if I am working on it in an O.R.?
