The Saab 900 2.1L puts out 140bhp. It has a great dohc/16v timing
chain engine, that sits under the hood lenghtwise, and over the
transaxle, giving it great self-centering handling with less torqueand
understeer than most fwd cars. The 900 has a rigid bodyshell
riding on 15" wheels. This plus SRS&ABS standard result in superior
safety ratings. I like the practical 2door hatchback design with seats
that fold down flat, so it can serve as a sporty wagon. Also, parts
are far more abundant. The funky 'classic' seems to have since fallen
into disfavor among the general used-car-buying public, thus lowering
the pricepoint!
On the other hand the 405 offers a more comfortable ride and
Pininfarina styling, plus the MI-16 [152bhp], allowing it to compete
perhaps w the Saab 900 turbo / SPG [175bhp], or more likely VW [16V].
The Saab seats [and suspension] pale in comparison to that of the Peugeot.
Personally, I much prefer [and still drive] the 505's for their
old-fashioned ruggedness to the 405... If only PSA would have
developed a contemporary 506... even a 506 coupe... I would not be
offering up my Saab-story here!
