Details are sketchy at the moment, but the following is known at this
point:
- PSA and Mitsubishi will cooperate on the building of 4 wheeled
vehicles, most notably, SUVs.
- PSA will invest a considerable amount of money in Mitsubishi.
This appears to be in the 2 billion dollar region.
- PSA and Mitsubishi will cooperate on the design and building of a
new line of cars.
Folz, the Chairman of PSA, travels to Tokyo next week to sign an
agreement.
My speculation is Peugeot returns to the USA. SUVs are overwhelmingly
American. Why would PSA sign an agreement of this nature unless they
were returning to the major SUV market? My hunch is that PSA will
supply bodies and Mitsubishi will supply engines and do assemblies at
the plant in Illinois which is very underutilized.
Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
