[Peugeot-L] Fw: the dreaded 405 clutch clip-second send

After a zillion miles in four 405's, I finally experienced what I presume to be the clutch clip problem last night in 405 #5. Wisely, I had the metal spring clip and the nylon whatever in the glove compartment. But it was dark and very cold on a snowy two-lane road, so I opted for a tow truck.

This morning, knowing I needed to adjust the clutch cable anyway, I removed the battery shelf first, for better access. Here's where I'm confused.

With head on the floor mat, and moving the clutch pedal up and down, I see what I presume to be the clutch cable apparently operating correctly. The cable is moving in and out with operation of the pedal. Nothing looks broken.

Under the hood, I find I can pull the end of the clutch cable all the way back to the firewall, and then slide it back into its approximate normal position. In either position, I see no difference when I check the pedal clip. Am I just having a tough time understanding the clip, etc., or do I need to replace the clutch cable?
