I've had the 2005 smart fortwo cdi cabriolet for three weeks now.
Over that time and 1500+ km it's been averaging about 60 MPG US (4.1
L/100 km) of Diesel in regular driving - city/town mix (on winter
fuel). It's been a delight to drive - the paddle shifters are great
and the seats superb (much better than the 405 seats) - and it keeps
reminding me that Citroën should have built a car like this. I was
only able to drop the top twice last week (it's winter of course) but
that was a gas too + the heated seats keep you warm with the top
down. Tomorrow we're driving about 400 km on the highway and I
expect to see the better side of 68 MPG US (under 3.5 L/100 km).
About the Mitsubishi/Peugeot tie-up, I agree with whomever said that
they would need a Carlos Ghosn to make that work properly, and PSA
doesn't have one. To me it is redolent of the Renault-AMC thing,
which was a total disaster for Renault. If Peugeot comes back to
Canada and the USA with a badge-engineered SUV by Mitsubishi, I will
be appalled if they don't also bring their small cars. That reminds
me of the story of the person who stuck Peugeot 406 badging on a
Toyota Solara <shudder>. I wouldn't look at anything larger than a
307 myself. A 206 HDI would be about right for us as the "first"
car. Well maybe a bit tight for five but the kids are growing up and
we rarely travel together all at once.
