The heater control valve on Peugeots up to 85 have a coil that comes off of
them that is supposed to rest agaisnt the heater core. This coil is filled
with a heat reactive substance ( probably mercury) which will regulate the
heat at the valve depending on the position of the lever. If this coil has
leaked out or has been cut off ( which I've seen done to many times) there
is no control over the heat anymore, it is either off or on.
