Hi Ken,
The Peugeot motors are all badly engineered, and are just plain
underpowered. This goes not only for the Power Windows, but things like the
Windshield Wiper Motor also are crappy. Makes me think they hired an
engineer whose previous job was making clock motors!
After a miserable first attempt at speeding up just one of the power window
motors in the '87 STX I used to have, (I rewound the motor) I ended up
solving it once and for all with a beefy homemade DC to DC converter
(switching boost converter) in the fusebox to provide an accessory bus that
was adjustable. I hooked several of the underperforming loads to it to
improve their performance; The Power windows/sunroof, the Windshield wipers,
Seat Heaters, and the rear window defroster. I think I had it set to around
20 volts, and it made everything run beautifully. I had to remove the
little bulbs in some of the switches, but I replaced them with LEDs. The
bulbs in the power window switches never last anyway.
As I said, this was my second attempt at doing something to help the
molasses-motors. My first was a re-winding attempt. It helped a tiny bit,
but not enough to be worth the immense amount of effort. Being an
Electrical Enginner, the obvious final solution was simply MORE POWER!
It was the only Peugeot I've ever had that could actually beat the speed of
a Corvette. (Power Window Speed, that is! ;-)
And this electrical boost along with my seat heater hack (posted a long time
ago to the list), produced a very nice seat heating system. I had to add an
extra button to select low/high voltage for the heaters after I discovered
that the seat heaters (running at 20v with no thermostat) would really roast
your ass in short order! At 12v though, they self-regulate beautifully.
I also (big suprise) broke a sunroof cable sheath right after I did this,
but that has happened on every sunroof-equipped 505 I've ever owned, so I
was prepared. I have a hack for that too! :-)
The only downside was that it Didn't have enough power to run the Wipers AND
a power window when the Rear-Window Defroster was on. (It would shut down
to protect itself) You could probably also get away with a much smaller
converter is you only were powering the windows/wiper.

Subject: sluggish window motors (84 505 STI)
The rear power window motors and sunroof motor in my 84 505 STI are
very sluggish. I had thought of mixing a batch of half WD-40 and half
Metamucil to remedy the problem, but am appealing to the list first to
see if anyone out there has any remedies. I have several questions
which are:
1. Might it be that the tracks for the windows are inhibiting
movement? If so, is there some way to lubricate the tracks.
2. The same question for the sunroof, but where exactly does one
lubricate the sunroof and what should I use?
3. If it is not the tracks do I have to remove and pull apart the
window and sunroof motors, or is there a way to lubricate them without
disassembling the motors?
Thanks,
Ken
