So, my '88 505 Turbo Danielson 5-spd is sitting w/ a blown
turbocharger and a leaky rear main in NC and I'm in FL w/ my '85
wagon, now with a hole in the side of the engine. It threw a rod at
243,000 miles.
Looks like I've gotta replace it. Car shopping sucks. I guess the
days of being able to find a good, clean reliable 505 Turbo on demand
are gone. I've been scoping out this 1999 Jetta VR6 5-spd w/ 62k
miles. It was a leased vehicle in its past life and went to auction.
Upon inspection, everything seems clean and very tight w/ the car,
but it's being sold by one of those curbside used car dealerships.
They've offered it to me for 8800 out the door -- a price that makes
my stomach twist; while it's below bluebook on the car, it just seems
like a poor substitute for a 505 turbo (I'll fix mine and keep it in
good shape, but I don't want it to be my daily driver anymore because
I like it too much).
My car concerns are that it's been auctioned, which makes me a little
nervous. I guess it could've been taken in as a trade and the car
could be too old for a dealership to put on their preowned lot.
Anyone got any words of wisdom for me?
