To our shame here in North America, you are absolutely correct about the high sulfur diesel fuel (it's supposed to disappear next year) I completely agree with your assessment of the the superb Peugeot HDI engines, which I experienced in, of all places, a Ford Mondeo Estate. However, I do beg to differ about the current batch of Peugeots - I just can't get as excited about them as I can about the old but classic five series - sadly and notably missing from the current offerings.
