Not to forget the first German front-driver DKW F1 from 1931 (
http://www.audi.de/audi/de/de2/unternehmen/historie/technik_highlights/f
rontantrieb.html ) .
The leaders of the German "Wehrmacht" didn´t trust these Frontdrivers
and didn´t require them for the war. So most cars on German streets in
the WW II mostly were DKW´s with front-drive !
Earlier than the Rabbit (VW Golf) in 1972 RENAULT and CITROEN started
with front-drivers like the 2CV or the Renault 4 and also SIMCA was much
earlier with the Simca 1100 (1204 US-Version) in 1967...

This just in from local Pugpal Gordon Brown (505 STX, 505 Turbo Wagon).
-1928 Alvis (UK), the first front wheel drive car was not successful.
-1929 Cord L-29 was the first US front wheel drive car, however, because
of poor sales due to the stockmarket crash, production was stopped in
1932.
-1934 Citroen Traction Avant. Production ceased in 1957, making this
model the first really successful front wheel drive automobile.
-1936 Cord 810 and 812, with its stunning styling by Gordon Buehrig
stopped production in 1937 due to mechanical and financial problems.
-1949 SAAB 92
-1959 Mini - Long, very successful production.
-1966 Oldsmobile Tornado, followed by Cadillac Eldorado (1967-1980)
-1974 Volkswagen Golf (Rabbit)
-1980 GM X body cars (Citation, Omega, Skylark) were the first front
wheel drive compact US cars and pretty well set the stage for the
running gear platforms of today's GM production.
-1986 Ford Taurus
