In 1912, that first dohc racing engine also had a cross-flow head and I think hemi combustion chambers; but the big change was the small displacement. With the less sophisticated layout of previous engines, they needed displacement for power; and the last Fiat racing engine was 24ltrs.( I think).

Peugeot won its first Indy in 1913.

Peugeot invented the light diesel engine- remember Rudolf Diesel?

They were also the first to introduce car diesel starting with the ignition switch.
