Re: [Peugeot-L] Is your Peugeot the car you love the most?

You jogged my memory. When we had the dealership in New Orleans, we had great streets to test drive French cars on as most were washboard with huge potholes since they were built on what was pretty much swampland with a water table of 11/2- 2 ft. Not only did the Peugeots soak up these rough streets, but they did so with your hands off the wheel as they drove straight as an arrow over the most horrific streets you could possibly imagine! Unbelievable and quite fun to sell as you would amaze people. Remember, back in the early 80's, not even Cadillacs and Lincoln's could handle that kind of street even at reduced speeds; whereas the Peugeot's could fly down those streets and never even bottom out. I remember an old road test in Road & Track of either a 403 or 404 where they said the car was dangerous as they were driving back roads in Canada, and at night you could drive over a cliff and not realize it. Humorous, but high praise, indeed!

I have driven Renaults and Citroëns but as far as I am concerned, no one car I've even driven/ridden in before of any marque (SAAB, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus etc) has the (quirky) class and charm of the 505. I drove over a pretty foul "paved" (broken, twisty, bumpy, narrow) road I know only too well at 70-80 kph in my Corolla. At 120 kph, the Pug handled like a silent fighter jet on cushioned rails. I like my other cars for other reasons, but the Peugeot is just something special.

How many of you know that the guy who first sculpted the Peugeot lion, also sculpted the Statue of Liberty? Or that Peugeot was the first to develop battery ignition, first to make a station wagon, that Michelin developed pneumatic tires on Peugeots, and that they were the first to put all the elements together that defined the modern racing engine. That they won the Indy 500 3 times in the period between 1910 and 1920, and that the company goes back to the 15th century. They also developed the process of cold rolling steel back in 1810, which is how steel for autos is made. Peugeot , I think, are still a steel maker; and probably the only car manufacturer to make their own steel.

Both are great     cars that will last forever. But, there's nothing like my 505 turbo. I'm     looking forward to getting a Cx or SM when I move next year. I suppose that     car will take the top slot. But, I know life would not be the same if I     didn't have my 505.

Heading down to the garage to work on it now as a result of your prompt!     Thanks Paul!
