I'm sorry to inform you that what you heard is true. Sometimes when you change fluid in an automatic with alot of miles and no fluid changes, you can actually see pieces of clutch come out with the fluid. Still, you need to change the fluid or you're guaranteeing eventual failure. It's a hard call. I would do it slowly and carefully, and after draining drop the pan and change the filter. Top up with the almost 3 qts. Run it at idle awhile, let the new fluid mix, and then take it for a gentle test drive. Recheck the fluid level and top up if necessary. Maybe after driving for awhile, you could just drain and refill. My point of view is that if there are pieces of clutch coming apart inside your tranny, it doesn't have much time any way.
Good luck!

I would NEVER NEVER change the oil in a transmission at a commercial shop that uses a *power flush/drain* system. You are almost guaranteeing trouble with an older vehicle, both with seals, and with power-loosened dirt clogging valves etc. I have a 53 Kaiser with a Hydramatic, hasn't run in years--before I even attempt to get it running again, its 'drop the tranny pan etc' (the transmission worked perfectly when last it ran)
I don't see a problem with draining and topping up carefully, then driving, then repeating many many times. It will lessen the concentration of evil stuff in the fluid, without out necessarily dislodging more. Dropping a pan is always an option. Time consuming indeed!
A thing to consider for both transmission AND engine (and other) drain hole plugs is to attach a small extremely powerful 'rare earth' magnet, (half-inch diametre would be more than enough) as can be purchased from Lee Valley Tools etc. Any metallic particles in the oil (oh-oh) sometimes known as "grey paint" can be attracted to the drain plug for easy disposal before they do more damage elsewhere.

Havn't heard of that, but having broken down fluid or the wrong fluid and
having a clogged filter starve the tranny would be a bad thing. If it were
mine, I would change it too.
