Not sure about the whining noise, but wheel bearings will usually make a
more low-frequency "rumbling" kind of noise.
I've seen 4 sources of "fuel smell" in my experience with 505's:
- The plastic disc that mounts in top of the tank and holds the fuel sender
cracks and allows vapor to escape.
- The hard plastic vapor line on top the tank comes loose and causes vapor
to vent. This could be caused by a clogged or inop vapor recovery system
(charcoal canister, etc).
- The metal on the tank where the filler neck is attached fatigues and a
small crack develops. (Ouch!)
- (Most Common) The little rubber line that connects to the bottom of the
filler port falls off or gets accidentally dislodged when storing stuff in
the side (rear fender) compartment. I've had this happen several times, and
it not only will result in fuel smell, but also usually water accumulating
in the fender. On every 505 sedan I've owned since, I put a hose clamp on
this little demon! This line is where the spilled fuel (and water) goes,
and it dumps it underneath the car. One good rain can put a huge amount of
water in that fender!
