I've been following this thread with much interest. I feel compelled to
jump in at this time-
I own an 89 405 mi16 which I have adored since day 1 and want to keep as
long as possible. It has everything- a great ride, precise responsive
steering, tight handling, smooth braking, reasonable power, just the right
size while room for 5 with luggage, and remains a delight to drive at
110,000 miles- it feels like a fine sports car disguised as a sedan. AND,
it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned.
Trouble-free, of course not. I do not work on my cars myself mainly because
I am a pianist and need to be careful with my fingers. I have had a lot of
trouble getting parts and a good mechanic recently. I have had an unwanted
stay overnight on the road while dealing with an alternator failure. This
has been annoying. But has this discouraged me from wanting to keep my
mi16? NO WAY!
I cannot stomach the thought of driving a Corolla or such ilk just because
it's supposedly reliable. I trust there are Toyota drivers with horror
stories too. Driving a car to me is sensual, and the current crop of new
car offerings, cool as they may be with the latest gadgetry, do not offer
the essential ingredient I want from a car- a direct relationship with the
road. The slogan "nothing feels like a Peugeot" is not just hype!
My point- For some, it may be worth it to drive a newer cookie-cutter car,
but for me, despite the extra trouble at times, it remains a no-brainer. I
plan to keep my mi16 until it dies completely, I die, Peugeot returns to the
US market, or I move to Europe, whichever comes first.
