My brother gave me a Snap-On leak down tester for Christmas, and I
have a couple of questions about using it. I understand that I need
to find TDC (I want to go ahead and adjust the valves while I am in
there, anyway).
I have a crib sheet with the Grubbs tutorial on valve adjusting, and
it goes like this:
"Follow the procedure in the book, they give you 2 methods.
The method I prefer to use requires you to turn the engine over until
the valves for cyl #1 (flywheel) are exactly overlapped (look at
lobes), then I adjust the clearance for the #4 valves (0.2mm intake,
0.3mm exhaust). Then I rotate the engine so cyl #3 is overlapped and
I adjust the valves for #2. Rotate again so that #4 is overlapped and
adjust #1. Finally, get the valves for #2 overlapped and adjust #3.
Overlapping Adjust
1 4
3 2
4 1
2 3
When the valves are overlapped on cyl #1, the valves for cyl #4
should be totally shut. #1 and #4 are opposite, just like #2 and #3
are opposite. The sequence follows the engine's firing order.

So I get #1 overlapping and connect my leak down gauge to #4, and on
and on, right?
And I need to secure the engine. It is a manual transmission. Can I
just put it in gear (reverse?) and chock the wheels, or do I need to
do something else? What about if the car is an automatic? How often
should the valves be adjusted on the turbo?
