OnI had the same problem in an '89 405 I wanted to change the seat in.
I think you're best off trying to get the seat to work in the car
1st, and then removing it to R&R the drive mechinism.
The reason I say this is because I was not able to access the rear
bolts to remove it because the seat would not go forward. I got
impatient, tried to force it, and ended up breaking the worm drive
gear on each rail. I had to chisel the heads of the seat bolts off
to get the seat out, and it was a huge ordeal.
For backwards/forwards, I suggest you get in there and clean the
tracks really well. They have square holes in which the worm gears
turn. Clean it all up, then put something down to protect your
carpet, and start spraying LPS or WD in where those worm gears are.
With the switch, try to get the seat to go back and forth a little.
Keep giving it oil as you do this, and eventually it'll start going!
Up/down is pretty much the same. In my 405's, the seat is always at
the bottom and even then I hit my head on the roof! They always
stick at the bottom. There is just one jack screw that controls
this. You can see it from under the front of the seat. Clean that
screw up really well, and get as much oil down inside it's square
housing as you can. Begin to try to get that seat to go up/down in
tiny increments with the switch. Before long, it will move further
and further, and then it will be free again.
Let us know how this goes!
