The ealy 504's had the tank underneath. Later models had the tank in the trunk. This was due to a Pinto getting rear ended and exploding so all fuel tanks were relocated as far away from the bumper as possible by federal regulations. The fuel filler was also moved to the opposite corner from the driver for reasons unknown to me, a guess being that it was necessary to protect the fuel filler guy being trapped between the car and the pumps in an explosion. The trunk in the '75 504 I have is enormous! It should say U.S. model on a sticker under the hood.

My '76 504D has the tank underneath and the filler on the left...does this mean it is not a US model? How can I tell?

Is that photo on craigslist the wrong way around or do Left Hand drive 504s
really have the fuel filler on the right hand side? Right hand drive 504
diesel of similar vintage has the fuel filler on the left.
