The gas tank in the trunk started in 77 or 78 after the Pinto fiasco. 73 up US models had the rubber bumpers while others retained the stainless bumpers. There were also some trim and structural differences.

My '76 504D has the tank underneath and the filler on the left...does this mean it is not a US model? How can I tell?

Is that photo on craigslist the wrong way around or do Left Hand drive 504s
really have the fuel filler on the right hand side? Right hand drive 504
diesel of similar vintage has the fuel filler on the left.
