Personally, with as tight Federal regulation has become on the
importation of new, non-US legal cars, I would seriously be demanding
proof of all paperwork filed on the car- NHTSA, EPA, Customs, any
state required papers. An educated guess tells me anything less
subjects the car to re-exportation, or confiscation, and even
possible destruction. One more thing- DO NOT make the mistake of
buying an ex-diplomat car. Those are supposed to go home with the
owner when their duty ends in the US. Back in the day, you could get
away with it because the car would already be established in the homestates'
(usually DC, New York or California) DMV, and title transfer
was more, um, innocent. Not any more. I hope it does turn out you can
have the car- I like nothing more than flashing a big, fat middle
finger at all those idiotic regulations and the bureaucrats who write
them.
