If the only reason for selling the car is for lack of airbags, may I suggest that you and your wife touer the local towing companies and wrecking yards and take a look at the cars involved in accidents, especially if you can get a history of the accident and injuries. I'm in the towing business and there needs to be a lot of fine tuning done yet before I buy a car equipped with airbags. The early version deployed at nothing, causing bodily injury for no reason and the newer versions don't deploy most of the time as the vehicle was not hit at the right spot. I've been told by an insurance adjuster that a manufacturer was being sued just for that reason, the car completely demolished and no airbag deployed. In my opinion, a european car in the 80s, without the passive seat belts, is one of the safest vehicles around in case of accident. They have crush zones front and rear with a solid passenger area with active seat belts.
