PS My tow dolly has surge brakes some have electric brakes. Electric brakes require a
controller in the tow vehicle.
I don't know about the US but all the U-Haul dollies they rent in Winnipeg Canada
have no brakes at all. This makes them totally illegal as soon as the total towed
weight (this includes the dolly) exceeds some 950 kg or about 2000 lb. in Manitoba.
Flat states have a higher limit... mountain states have lower limit.
The dollys must weigh 500 lb so what the hell are they up to.
In US U-Haul insists that the tow car to weigh at least 50% more than the towed car
this has nothing to do with any state laws as far as I know
What ever you do I recommend checking with the states you will be towing through.
Bob
