No.

Yes.
The new all-Volvo design was introduced in 1998 or 2000 (I forget
which, google for Volvo D5 for more info). The D5 was based upon
their 'modular' white block gas motors. Up till that point VW diesel
engines were used.
Which always puzzled me. There were plenty of good Peugeot diesels to
choose from, and Volvo took the V6 instead.
