The tooth was probably from one of the spyder gears
If you had lost a rig gear tooth you would have known
right away

About 3 years ago, I replaced one in my '96 that was "howling" for about
45,000 miles. It came from an 87. When I drained the fluid, I found lots
of metal shavings and a TOOTH that appeared to be from the ring gear.
Surprisingly, the thing was running fine, just making noise. Now it's
totally quiet.
