[Peugeot-L] 505 Sedan Diff and Torque Tube Removal

Removing the diff is relatively easy

Jack up the rear end and support on stands Drain the diff
Remove the right rear wheel
Remove the 2 bolts (8 mm Allen) that hold on the rt rear caliper and hang the caliper out of the way
Remove the 4 bolts (8 mm Allen) that hold the rt rear hub bearing to the trailing arm, they are found through the hole in the hub, you will need light to find them while rotating the hub
In dealing with these Allen bolts I use a long (5") 8 mm Allen key on a 3'8 socket I recommend Snap on
Spray the hole in the bolt with WD 40 and tap the Allen key in with a hammer You will need a 3/8 to 1/2 adaptor and a long 1/2"ratchet or bar as these bolts can be tight and rusted
Depending on the amount of corrosion the axle assy may just about fall out or you may need an explosives expert,... a loop of chain fastened to wheel studs with a sledge hammer inside the loop and a good swing should jerk it out if stuck Undo the exhaust hanger at the diff
Remove the 4 nuts (16 or 17 mm) that hold the diff to the torque tube ....it can be tricky getting at the upper nuts
The diff will slide back it would be good to have help holding it up will you push the drive shaft off the splines and back into the torque tube You can the move the diff to the right off the left axle splines I think this can be done without removing the spare tire carrier but I'm not positive

To remove the drive shaft from the torque tube you need to remove the carrier for sure. But if you just want to remove the driveshaft and bolt the diff back up for towing an automatic a long distance, you do not need to remove the right axle. Just undo the diff and carrier and slide it back and let it hang on both axles

  Hello to Bob Bruce, thanks, and a question;

  Thanks for the diff. ratios and ID letters - where on the case does one   find said letter? Also, any tricks of the trade for R&R on these units?   And about how long could one expect to take having never done the job   before?
  Thanks, Tom Woods, with a problem in my rear-end...............
