Ah, I had expected numbers more along the lines of what you guys have
mentioned, and would be quite happy if I could get near 30 mpg. I think
the seller had mentioned that he had replaced the o2 sensor which is why
I'm kind of surprised at the bad gas mileage. I'll have to double check
the o2. Aside from that I think it needs some ignition attention,
wires/cap/rotor/plugs. Also a new air filter. Anything else that I can
check out that I have failed to mention?

Trevor, is sounds like you need a good tune up.
I have a 1989 MI16 and the worst mileage that I have recorded is 29.37
MPG. The average is 31.5 MPG, and I don't drive like an old lady.
Highway doing 65 MPH the car gets 35, at 80 to 85 MPH (my kind of speed)
the car gets a consistent 32 MPG.
You want to check the OX sensors as well.
