Wouldn't it be great if we could get our little mitts on this European
turbo-diesel technology, and not the vehicles on steriods (Chrysler 300 and
all trucks/SUVs) that seem to instead represent the "state-of-the-art" (!!)
here in North America. BTW, I am starting to see more Smart cars here in
Toronto. They do look a little out-of-place beside the ubiquitous SUVs, but
some brave souls are trying them. MT in Vancouver would be pleased!
Last night we had about 5 inches of powder snow. I was driving my
designated snow machine - Jim Lill's old wagon (88 ZDJL 5 speed GLS wagon)
with Hakks on all four corners. My 84 XN6 5 speed wagon (on Michelin all
seasons!) was also a real trooper in that sort of weather, but Jim's old rig
thinks it's a friggin' mountain goat! Being able to feather the clutch, use
second gear starts and shifting up extra-early to kill excess torque is a
decided advantage with the 5 speed. Anyway, the wagon just frolicked in the
snow and couldn't get enough of it.
The only guy who passed me was driving a Honda and I'd love to know what
snow tires he was on. Last night was not the first time I have blown by
FWDs and 4WDs that were stuck on only a moderate hill, with their four way
flashers on, and two Bimmers who were immobilized, absolutely helplessly, on
a very shallow grade, with those big fat tires spinning uselessly on top of
the snow, while the skinny (195) Hakks just sliced right through everything.
Jim's car rode on some 205 Nokias last summer, which completely changed its
handling characteristics, but as previously noted on this list, skinny is
the way to go in winter. Looks silly, but works like a charm. Everyone who
goes wide ends up tobogganing. All the Bimmers could do was call a tow
truck.
FWIW, I've always found that even aging 505s start easily in the winter.
XN6, N9TE and ZDJL, no exceptions. Synthetic oil makes it a lot easier on
them.
Cheers
Mike in snowy T.O. (Toronto, to all the out-of-towners)
