Hi everyone,
This is Raminder Malik with a 1991 405 turbo (70K Miles) diesel in
India. Long period of silence from me because the car has been
relatively trouble free. I am now planning to remove some minor
irritants, and need your advice.
- Front Suspension
There are four symptoms that I want to address. First is unwanted noise.
There is a general rumble (no “knocks”) over bad road stretches. All the
wheels are balanced and aligned. I have identified one faulty component
– the left track end rod, which is clearly “loose”. All other suspension
components (lower balljoints, bushes etc) seem to be in reasonably good
condition. My question is: What are the other components that can cause
this “rumble”
Second symptom is a ¼ to ¾ inch gap at the top of the struts, where they
are bolted inside the engine bay. This varies with turning the steering.
The gap is least with the wheels straight, and maximum at the
extremities. The internal strut bushes have been renewed. Is this gap
normal? Or is there a problem – like the springs having sagged due to
age? Could this be contributing to the rumble?
Third symptom is a general “harshness” of the front suspension over
bumps, and a general feeling of “looseness”. The struts have been
removed and checked for leaks and smooth travel, with no signs of
problems. Inspite of this, can the struts be the culprit, or should I
look at something else?
The fourth symptom is a pronounced “creak” (no “knock”) whenever going
at slow speed over a speed hump. The creak comes when the car is coming
“down” from the hump. It is a “stereo” sound in the sense that one can
easily make out two distinct sources, one on the left and one on the
right. To me it seems from the area of the anti sway bar bearings/bushes
or the anti sway bar drop links. Any ideas?
2. Stereo
Recently got an original Peugeot (Clarion) head unit and CD changer from
a 1995 405 from Ebay UK. The Peugeot model number is 4050. Works
perfectly except for some minor problems:
My car has a orange colored Peugeot stereo connector. The new deck has a
black (Clarion?) connector. In the older deck, there were two wires for
power (+ve) – one switched for the main power, and one direct for the
memory backup. This has three wires – one direct and two switched (at
least that is how I got it to work). My question is – what is the
function of the extra power wire? The LCD display is very dim during the
day, but fine at night. Is the second switched wire for the display? If
yes, does it have a day / night lighting difference like the clock display?
Secondly, the deck seems to lose power (switches off and then on again)
for a fraction of a second with high volume/bass, or sometimes when the
deck is playing and I activate the turn indicators / brakes / diesel
glow plugs. Is this due to faulty connections, or a general low
condition of the power in a power wires?
Lastly, in the tuner, the forward seek and the scan functions do not
work all the time (both from the deck as well as the steering mounted
stick remote). The forward seek function sometimes does not move to the
next FM station, and the scan function moves forward, but does not stop
at all the stored stations. Any ideas?
Thank you all in advance, for helping me keep my 405 running in India,
whic is "wilderness" as far as Pugs are concerned.
