It blows me away that Europeans apply emission controls retroactively
upon older cars.
It was these same governments' fault that EU cars had virtually no
emission controls until 1986. So what was legal for sale at that
time suddenly becomes illegal? What a ridiculous outcome! There
should be class-action lawsuits over this.
In Canada (and I believe the US) there is no such retroactivity
rule. In fact, the problem goes away with time, as older cars are
naturally retired and only a few are left in circulation or the hands
of collectors. This hardly justifies the draconian retroactivity -
there are too few to be a real problem! These older cars should be
required TO MEET THE STANDARDS OF THEIR TIME, no more!
The equally absurd attempt by the EU to make any old car with
asbestos components illegal to drive (until the offenfdng As was
removed) is just another example. In many cases, removing Asbestos
is more hazardous than leaving it in place.
Surely someone over there in a position of policy making realises
that there is a law of dimishing returns at play here?
