[Peugeot-L] XN6 poor idle

My 1987 Liberte Wagon XN6 automatic just started idling very poorly. Very low RPMs and some black smoke. Off idle and driving is fine, otherwise runs great. Cold start is fine. So is warm start.

I had turned out the air idle screw last summer to raise the idle and I can't turn it out any further or it will fall out. The only way I can raise the idle high enough to keep it running is via the small screw that contacts and adjusts the microswitch. I know that's not the way to raise the idle though.

Checked for vacuum leaks, none present. What other areas should I look into?
