Mike Tippett, 44, live on Vancouver Island, BC Canada....currently I
have two Peugeots:
- 1966 404 Coupé Injection restoration project car. I have virtually
all the NOS body parts I'll need to do her up right, when the time
comes. Not to mention mechanical parts; same story there. Beautiful
car, the Pininfarina-built 404 Coupé and Cabriolet...
- 1989 405 DL sedan (no wagons in Canada), 332,000 km, light body
damage on passenger side (cosmetic only, not worth repairing) - good
car; owned it 11 years and put 300,000 of those km on myself. Seats
suck, rattles like a box of marbles and electrics are dodgy but
nonetheless she has served me well.
I also have another French-built car, 2005 model:
smart fortwo cdi cabriolet; 40 HP @ 4200, 74 lbs-ft @ 1800-2800, 6
speed sequential manual gearbox (electrically operated clutch),
driver-selectable automatic program (softouch) with leather steering
wheel-mounted paddle shifters and floor shift lever,
ESP/BAS/ABS/EBD/CBC/ASC (all the Bosch active safety goodies
standard), electric windows, remote locking and roof opener, threeway
electric soft-top, heated seats, electric/heated mirrors, 15 inch
alloy wheels, air conditioning, tachometer/clock, there's more - you
name it ;-) Averaging 4.2 L/100 km (~59 MPG US) since I got it, in
mixed urban/suburban driving.
Other cars I have owned (chronological order) but sold or scrapped:
-1976 Renault 5 GTL
-1981 Renault 5 GTL (France)
-1967 404 Coupé Injection
-1965 Renault Dauphine
-1970 Renault 10
-1970 Renault 12 TL
-1984 Renault 5 GTL (France)
-1963 404 sedan (converted by me to KF2 Injection, woo-hoo)
-1986 Renault Super 5 TC (France)
-1988 Renault Super 5 TR (France)
-1990 Renault Clio RL (France)
-1984 Renault 5 GTL (CDN model)
-1996 405 Style Diesel Break (France)
Notice a trend? They're all French or French built!
I am still choked that Peugeot retreated from this continent in shame
14 years ago and I wish they'd come back. Few of their cars interest
me now, though a 1007 might fit the bill as a family car. The 406
Coupé would be nice too, but it's out of production now.
You know what? As each year goes by, I doubt more and more that
Peugeot will ever return here, and if they do, it'll likely be with
their huge cars (407, 607) which I don't like. They're way too big
for my tastes, and since Pininfarina has been removed from their
model design (1007 excepted) I think they've lost their way
stylistically.
My 5 cents worth. This is a great list with great people and I hope
it remains in place for the ever-dwindling cadre of Peugeot-philes in
North America for decades to come.
