I remember your post about the test drive. Made me almost glad we don't get the French cars anymore as we can still remember them as great. I do check out the English mags pretty regularly; and it looks as if the two hottest cars are the Skoda and the SEAT, both based on VWs. I really like the new VWs; but I still don't trust their reliability, and especially their parts prices. Good luck with your Skoda!

My 405 had the original Clarion/ Peugeot radio but never got the code wrong 3 times.   I have no longer got the car but there was a button that had to be pressed if you got the code wrong to try again. It was just a suggestion to Sokol about his problem.   I no longer own the 405 as I traded it in at the end of last year and the only Peugeot I own now is my wifes 206 which she has identified a non Peugeot replacement that she wants. Even if we go totally Peugeotless I still plan on hanging around in the wings of the group as some of the flame wars are amusing, though some make my blood boil.   Yes, I am a turn coat as my replacement for the 405 was a Skoda Superb which is a varient of the Audi A6 / A8 built on the Passat Plus chassis that VW designed but never built. It is not a handling car but refined and relaxed for distance. Had it 3 months now and just about to hit 6,000 miles. I could not justify the repair costs on the 405 and the 407 I test drove was smaller, more expensive to buy and run, had less favourable reports in all articles I read and just plain awfull in my view on the test drive (a lot of that was down to very poor dealer attitude, he thought I would just move from the 405 to the 407 on brand love but the test car was filthy inside and out, an SW not a saloon and engine felt normally aspirated and sluggish). If he had come up with a saloon as requested it may have been a different story. I am 6 foot, my wife 5 ' 11", my oldest daughter 6 ' 3" and youngest is a short arse at 5 ' 8" so the extra room the Skoda offered was welcome.

I'm not sure if the Peugeot radio is the same; but if it's like other coded radios, after 3 unsuccessful tries, the radio has to be left on for an hour before you can try entering the code again.

Also, I just accidently deleted the previous post about the automatic not always going into reverse. ZF trannys are unusual in that they're all clutches with no bands, and reverse has two sets of clutches. Usually, changing the filter restores the fluid pressure needed to engage reverse; but if yours was particularly dirty, another change might be worth the effort. If not, then maybe not having enough hydraulic pressure burned some of the clutches. You might check with an automatic transmission shop who knows ZF and verify the correctness of what I'm saying, and see if they recommend an additive that may help in this case. At any rate, good luck. Remember, these ZFs are very good transmissions; and most of the problems are owner or mechanic caused.

This sounds like your radio has lost power and needs the security code putting back in.    4 digit code and if I remember correctly from my 405 the BND button when held in resets it so that you can have another go with the code if you get it wrong.

Subject: Problem with my radio

I have a Peugeot 306 of 1997 and it has its original radio.

I don't know what happened, but when I turn it on I get dashed lines and no radio.

I have discover a way to turn it on, I press simultaneously the on/off button and BND button (the button that changes the bands) and it is ok but it lasts approx. 3 minutes and it goes back to the state with dashed lines and no radio. Also, the red light that used to go on and off when the car is parked doesn't work anymore.

Does anyone has any solution?

thanks,
sokol
