-MAN, dont we wish! we wish a 9-5 were an updated 9000! actually the 9000 chasis was pretty old. SAAB could have done well updating it, but to GM is was just plain old.

9-5 is was all new from the ground up on a GM platform. the 9000 had been the platform that Alfa Romeo/Fiat and SAAB developed back in the early 1980s for the 164, Chroma, and 9000. The new 9-5 platform is also used by Opel and some other GM companies. one cray thing, the 9- 5 is smaller inside than a 9000! the 9000 was a tough act for anyone to follow on interior room though.

the 9-5 is not as safe or strong, as you can see in any junk yard! it is also not as well tested in the development stage as an older SAAB cars. it is a nice car, but all the nice SAAB engineering touches like doors that open to an amazing nearly 90 degree angle and the strong volvo style door hinges. It also lacks the very subtle but interesting SAAB attribute of having the driver's pelvis in the middle of the car (f/b obviously) when the seat is all the way back. many other things too...driving a 9-5 with a pile of miles also does not feel like a SAAB. certainly not as wonderful as a 9000 or a c900 with a pile of miles!

the SAAB ideals, for over 50 years, were NOT acceleration or boundless performance, but SAFETY, efficiency, economy, ergonomics, comfort, excellent road holding through front wheel drive, and SIMPLE technology, even to make use of waste (turbo!, and performance within economical and sensible bounds, and nothing ever more than four cylinders! any more falls somewhere between not necessary and extravagent!

oh well
