[Peugeot-L] 505/xn6 wagon clutch replacement [pointers]

Are there any clever shortcuts to this operation? 'Book' calls for about 7 hrs; Haynes recommends pulling the engine. Shops, however seem to prefer pulling back the 3rd member... Is it neccesary to drop the torque tube and/or transmission, or will disconnecting only at the bellhousing/engine work just as well, etc? I'm about to find out for myself; would appreciate input from group...
