I imagine that if you had a device to hold the trans, torque tube
and diff and move it down and back away from the engine, in one piece you could save the grief of splitting off the TT and diff from the trans.
But at this point in a SW's life I would highly recommend
a thorough cleaning, inspecting and regreasing of the male and female splines at both ends of the drive shaft.
This not only requires splitting the TT from the trans but also from the diff.
It is also a perfect time for an inspection of the u-joint and if it has any play replace it.
And of course the rear trans mount if it is mushy or cracking.
And a new rear trans seal.
None of this is possible if you remove the engine to service the clutch.
When I started it was all 404s, the sedans as well as the SWs had the same power train layout as the 504 and 505 SWs.
We had no hoist and pulling the engine was the usual course.
But with proliferating add-ons under the hood to the late 504s and all the 505s I prefer rear entry.
Do you think the NSA computers will kick this line out? God save of all from Dick Chaney.

Subject: [Peugeot-L] 505/xn6 wagon clutch replacement [pointers]
Are there any clever shortcuts to this operation?
'Book' calls for about 7 hrs; Haynes recommends pulling the engine.
Shops, however seem to prefer pulling back the 3rd member...
Is it neccesary to drop the torque tube and/or transmission, or will
disconnecting only at the bellhousing/engine work just as well, etc?
I'm about to find out for myself; would appreciate input from group...
