Todd,
Obviously, the beautiful 404. Don't be too upset, old cars will have problems; and the no rust and good brakes are big pluses. The owner might have just rebuilt the carb, and that might be why it idles poorly. Old carbs are simple. I'm not familiar with that model ( I might be, I just don't remember what carb it had-probably a Solex ), but people who don't know carbs sometimes set the idle with the throttle setting. The throttle has to be closed in order for the idle circuit to operate properly. Usually you back off the throttle adjustment until the stop screw no longer contacts the throttle linkage, turn the screw in half a turn; and then adjust the idle with the mixture screw. Some of the older Solex's had two screws- a mixture and an air by-pass- and they had certain procedures for adjusting them. Get a good manual, and it should be easy. The other possibility is that the idle circuit didn't get cleaned out well enough, so you may have to redo it; or it may be like
the downdraft, single Solex on the old Alfa Giulias and Giuliettas which would get so clogged that you couldn't clean them and they would ice up, so people replaced them with a Weber. Don't be upset, a little working on it will acquaint you with it quickly and bring you closer. Sort of like a wife. Good luck and enjoy. Oh, and check for vacuum leaks as he may not have used a new gasket, or there could be warpage, or the carb body by the throttle spindles may be worn.
