Probably the same way that the Japanese have built up a reputation for problem-free products. Lest you forget the nighmare carbs of the late 80s-early 90s, the disposable Accord distributors, the oil sludging problems, the transmission problems (Accord V6, Legend, Sienna, etc), etc, etc.
