Re: [Peugeot-L] "multiplex" harness wiring system

This multiplexing is being done by many manufacturers as it saves money and weight by reducing the size of the wiring harnesses significantly; but it can cause difficult to diagnose problems. There was a Volvo which had at least 5 different and seemingly unrelated problems, but was eventually traced to a door lock module in one of the doors. In order for different systems to use the same wiring, the ECU ( BTW, the new term which is industry wide is PCM or powertrain control module ) has to prioritize the usage; so if you turned on your headlights and wipers at the same time, it would activate one first and then the other. The nightmare, especially for owners like us, is for instance, if you wanted to add foglights to your new Volvo, since it didn't come from the factory with them, the PCM doesn't recognize them; so you have to go to your Volvo dealer and they hook it up remotely to their mainframe in N.J. in order to program into the PCM that you now have foglights.

There are many wires in older non-muxed systems where a even   single wire break will cause engine failure.

The main issue at hand is a malfunction on the bus somewhere, such as the   power window switch getting coffee spilled in it and deciding to flood the   bus with garbage.
