Adam,
That happened to me on a couple occasions, until I figured this out. I
did find a permanent fix that did last for well over 200K miles on my
previous 5 speed, 505 STI, and it worked very well.
(Should you find a new linkage, great! If you don't, or while waiting
for the new linkage this trick works. Get a tube of Steel Weld or some
other composite steel weld material and mix thoroughly. Create a round
ball size shape, and just stuff the material into the reciever end and
now just cram the ball end of the linkage into the reciever let it set
for 24 hours, and VOILA, new linkage. (Be careful to scrape off any
residual compound around the edges, don't worry about a little residue
that accumulates, because after it is set the accumulations will break
off. The weld will fill in the gaps and hold the linkage in place.
Happy shifiting!
Vincent
