Very little spam comes via the list, however the email addresses on the
list are harvested by spammers.
How do I know this?
I have one email address for posting to the list, and another for
receiving emial from the list.
A quick check of the junk folder shows around 150 spam messages in the
last couple of days to the email address I use for posting.
That email address is only used for posting to yahoo, nothing else.
The problem with using yahoo or any other well known groups website, is
that it is not much work for a spammer to sign up for a whole stack of
different groups, and then harvest the email address from each message
sent to them.
If we swapped to someones personal group server, it will take more
effort for the spammer to find and sign up.
Of course, you could be paranoid and not send the email addresses to new
subscribers until they had posted half a dozen on topic messages, and
censor messages from newbies prior to posting etc to make it harder for
spammers to lurk on the list (who wants some work? ).
I get a bit annoyed that Yahoo keep on dropping the ball. One returned
message and the list stops until you realise it has been too quiet for a
day or so, then you can't get the missed messages resent.
