[Peugeot-L] 406 EFI system Fault

Hi All,

I have just acquired a 1998 406 GLX, with the XU10J4R 2.0 16v engine, on the 5 speed gearbox.

It has an annoying intermittent fault in the injection system.

Basically, what is happening, is the idle is suddenly becoming very erratic, and in some cases is rapidly up and down, to the point where the rev counter needle is dancing all over, and banging against the bottom stop, and the engine almost cuts out. On driving, it appears to hesitate on pulling away, the suddenly will want to play, and sit you back in your seat. On letting off the gas, the whole car will lurch forward, as if the engine has been turned off, but then it will recover after a few seconds. Driving slowly in first gear at a constant throttle level will produce violent kangarooing of the car.

The whole time that this is going on, the Warning light on the dash is indifferent to whether it will light or not. Sometimes it will light and the car is behaving itself, and other times it will be playing up, and the light will stay out.

It obviously points to a sensor somewhere in the injection system, but it doesn't want to store fault codes... I've had it hooked up to a snap on unit a few times now, and nothing is showing... but it has always been behaving itself at the time I have been plugging it in.

Are there any sensors that are known to be troublesome on this particular engine? just so I have a head start in trying to find the problem... someone suggested that it could be the intake air temperature sensor in the back of the manifold (black plastic, held in place by one 10mm bolt), and I have taken it out and cleaned it, and blown it out, to no avail.....

Any ideas? I'm loathe to take it to a main dealer, and pay through the nose....

Cheers,

James
