Owen,

I do not have the 405 anymore but here is what I can tell you about mine and am not sure which of my posting you refer to.   I had the radiator re-cored and that improved things, did have a problem following that and the radiator company as a good will gesture replaced most of the hoses free of charge.   Mine had those nightmare batonet connectors to join to the radiator which require you to have hands the size of a 3 year old but with the strength of an adult. Twist through about 12 degrees and assist the untwist movement to lock onto the radiator.   I was still losing water but it was not continuous. You could do a few runs around town and lose a pint or two or nothing at all. Seldom lost any on a long run.   I replaced the radiator cap and thermostat at this point. Still no change.   I used the old radiator cap to fashion the header tank for bleeding that Peugeot Pete outlined in his proceedure.   I always found bleeding the system on his car to be a major pain and felt that I never really got all the air out.   The radiator went again and I had to replace it this time. This did improve things but did not cure it.   I replaced the "O" rings on the heater matrix at some point following the manual and removing the complete dash.   During this procedure I discovered by removing the glove box and undoing the connection on the engine side of the firewall it was possible to do this job without removing the dashboard (it is difficult to undo the the srew between the pipes where it connects to the matrix).   At a later date the matrix did fail and I replaced it.   The thread failed for the bleed screw on the thermostat housing and while replacing that part I damaged more of the housing and snapped the bolts holding it on as the had coroded from disimilar metal and exposure to coolant.   I did discover that the type of oil used had an effect on engine and coolant temperature.   The one thing not recommended for these engines is to use any type of leak stop product as it blocks the radiator core and adds to the problem. I have seen postings on the list saying members have had some sucess with some products but never used any on mine. I did try flushing the system to improve flow but that did not seem to make any difference.   The final thing changed was the water pump which had developed a noticable leak, this did seem to reduce the amount of topping up needed.   I also had the system presure tested on a number of occasions but this never revealed anything.   This may seem like an awful lot of work but was over the 10 1/2 years I owned the car and I can honestly say it never let me down due to cooling system. I did have to pull over in traffic a few times when towing to allow it to cool down but the fans always kicked in and brought it down quickly.   I am in the UK so it seldom get really hot here so if you live in a hot climate this problem is likely to be a headache. mine did not have the burden of airconn to contend with either.   There was a recent posting on the list from a member who said thaat cooling system problems were on the whole down to bad maintenance perhaps that poster can give you more ideas to try.   Best of luck with trying to sort yours out.
