Debbie,

The fan clutch on an '85 505, whether gas, gas turbo, or turbodiesel, is a straightforward device, which rarely needs replacing, but is often misunderstood by persons unfamiliar with it. The fan should freewheel with the engine off and while running before it is fully warmed up. When the coolant reaches a certain temperature, a switch in the radiator closes, sending current to the fan clutch through a carbon brush mounted on the water pump. Then the fan clutch engages, closing the gap between the pulley and hub, locking the fan to the pulley. When the coolant cools sufficiently the radiator switch opens and the fan is released, to spin more slowly on the friction in its bearings. If it is not working that way there are several simple things to check. I would be happy to assist you in troubleshooting the system. I also have any parts you are likely to need, but you may well not need any parts.
