I had a 1975 504D, 4 speed & a 1979 604 V6 3 Liter Gas, 5 speed.
The 604 could outrun almost everything, was a most comfortable car for long trips, which was well known.
However, as it aged and developed problems, it became obvious that it was to some degree a parts-shelf engineered car: a V6 that should have been a V8, carburetor that should have been fuel injected like the European model, air conditioning not worth a damn, electrical system and vacuum line system unspeakable in crudeness and problems; I could go on.
The 504 was an expertly designed or conceived car that was reasonably well executed. It had, for me, a suspension system that was the ultimate compromise in firmness-suppleness, directional stability and sureness at the cost of some roll going around corners but nevertheless instilling confidence in the driver, me. With a 2 1/2-3 liter engine, gas or Diesel, normally aspirated, turbocharged or supercharged, in place of the 2 liter underpowered IL 4 Diesel, it would have been more suited to our driving conditions and requirements.
I hope the raising of the 504 to increase ground-clearance project works well but question how well it will "drive."
