Most every vendor will have a different number for a gasket, as will
every manufacturer. On xd2.. and xd3.. engines the head set does not
include the head gasket because of the different thicknesses. I have
found that about 90% of engines take a 2-notch gasket. If the old
one is a 1- or 2-notch, you can safely use a new 2-notch. If the old
one is a 3- or 4-notch, measure the standout, because the majority of
new gaskets sold are 3-notch.
I am not aware of any inferior diesel head gaskets. All of them are
at risk for a few-year service life if you don't use TTY bolts
(threaded most of the way up). They may be reused, but the early
bolts should not be.
I am currently out of the 3-notch gaskets.
