Maybe if you had been squirting wd40 at the top of the hand brake pivot shaft where it enters the caliper for the last year But I have had little success with this problem I have even firgured out how to pull the caliper apart and reassemble it I've drilled some and installed grease nipples

It is the same caliper as most VW with rear discs from the early 1990s Jetta Passats
Get one from a junk yard

  The handbrake mechanism on the left rear caliper is sticky and not   returning. Has anyone had any luck freeing this up or am I destined   for a new caliper?
