I drive a '78 504D. I don't recall seeing wire mesh in either
the original or the replacement filler cap. I never felt the
motor excessively consumed/spit out oil. However when I do get around
to servicing air filter, there is a fair amount of oil in it. I replaced
the cap because a} I saw an inexpensive one on eBay b} the original
was getting loose{flat O ring after 30 years}.

If oil is coming out of the oil filler cap, try a tighter cap. Make
sure the pipes that go from the cap to the air filter are not clogged.
If the cap still pops off, try new rings.
I'm not sure if there is supposed to be wire mesh in there; the last 2
I had did't have any, but it may have fallen out, or got inhaled.
